SUMMARY

Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. Tummy tuck surgery achieves a flatter, firmer abdominal wall and more flattering waistline. For women it creates ideal curves, and for men it aims to help you achieve the inverted triangle shape that draws in your lower waist to accentuate your shoulder width, and assist in creating proportion.

Cosmeticium is one of the main clinics who offer tummy tuck surgery in İstanbul, Turkey.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR ABDOMINOPLASTY?

You may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • excess or sagging abdominal skin
  • an abdomen that protrudes and is out of proportion to the rest of your body
  • abdominal muscles that have been separated and weakened
  • excess fatty tissue that is concentrated in your abdomen

 TUMMY TUCK OPTIONS

Standard Tummy Tuck

  • An incision is placed low in the abdomen that runs from hip to hip
  • A secondary incision is created around the navel
  • The skin is separated from the abdominal wall
  • An internal corset technique stitches loose abdominal muscles together to create a firmer stomach area and more narrow waist
  • The abdominal skin is draped over the new muscular contour
  • Excess skin is trimmed away
  • A new navel is created to ensure a natural appearance
  • Incisions are closed

Mini Tummy Tuck

  • The mini tummy tuck is ideal for patients with muscle laxity but minimal excess skin
  • This technique doesn’t address tissue accumulation above the navel; the navel maintains its original positioning on the abdomen
  • Women with abdominal wall separation following pregnancy often choose a mini tummy tuck
  • Most suitable for patients who require only minor improvements to their lower abdomen
  • A single incision placed low in the pubic area is used

Combining Liposuction

  • Excess fat can obscure definition and contribute to a flabby appearance
  • Liposuction is a means of permanent fat removal via gentle suctioning
  • Liposuction can be combined with almost any tummy tuck procedure to enhance your results
  • Liposuction provides custom contouring of the abdominal area
  • It may also be used to create subtle, attractive curves at the hips
  • Liposuction uses tiny incisions placed around the abdomen to remove fat, which rarely results in any scarring

THE PROCEDURE

Tummy tucks take approximately 2 to 5 hours and are performed under general anesthesia.

Your abdomen will be cut from hipbone to hipbone in this procedure, the option for those patients who require the most correction. The incision will be made low, at about the same level as your pubic hair.

Your surgeon will then manipulate and contour the skin, tissue and muscle as needed. Your belly button will have a new opening if you undergo this procedure, because it’s necessary to free your navel from surrounding tissue. Drainage tubes may be placed under your skin and these will be removed in a few days as your surgeon sees fit.

RECOVERY PERIOD

For the first few days, your abdomen will probably be swollen and you’re likely to feel some pain and discomfort that can be controlled by medication. Surface stitches will be removed in five to seven days, and deeper sutures, with ends that protrude through the skin, will come out in two to three weeks. You will need to wear a support garment over your abdomen and under your clothes for about 6 weeks.

Exercise should be avoided for 6 weeks. Your scars may actually appear to worsen during the first three to six months as they heal, but this is normal. Expect it to take nine months to a year before your scars flatten out and lighten in colour. While they’ll never disappear completely, abdominal scars will not show under most clothing, even under bathing suits.

RESULTS

The results of abdominoplasty are very gratifying. You have a more fit, well-proportioned body shape. Your clothes fit better, and you feel better about the way you look.

Is A Tummy Tuck Like Liposuction?

Although both procedures can slim down the abdominal area, they are not much alike. A tummy tuck involves the removal of skin and fat along with tightening abdominal muscles, while liposuction only removes fat. Liposuction is better for localized fat deposit problem areas, while a tummy tuck is better for people with loss of abdominal muscle tone and loose skin, often following pregnancy or extreme weight loss. Both procedures grant a slimmer look, but through completely different methodology. Liposuction is often combined with a tummy tuck for more effective results.

Am I A Candidate?

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is already in good health, has a stable weight and realistic expectations regarding their results. This surgery is not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise. If considerable weight loss is planned, a tummy tuck should be postponed until after weight has stabilized. Also, this procedure is not suitable for women who expect to become pregnant, since stretching of the abdominal muscles and skin will greatly compromise surgical results.

What Does The Surgery Involve?

Abdominoplasty requires general anesthesia. To begin the surgery, the surgical area is prepped and an incision is made below the belly button from hipbone to hipbone. Through the incision, the abdominal wall is surgically retightened. After that, any excess skin and fat around the lower abdomen is removed, and the incision is sutured. Patients will need help getting around for the first few days.

What Results Should I Expect?

After surgery, your abdominal contours will be flatter and firmer. If you previously had loose or hanging folds around the stomach area, those will no longer be present. Oftentimes, skin which had stretch marks is also removed during the procedure. Your navel may be relocated and look slightly different as well.

What About Recovery?

Right after your surgery, dressings will be applied to the incision area. It may be painful to stand up fully straight at first. However, once you are able to stand upright comfortably, you’ll see a noticeable difference in your silhouette. There may be some swelling after the surgery initially, which can disguise your final results. This should resolve in the first month or so.

Will I Have Scars?

There is a scar any time your skin is cut, and our Denver abdominoplasty patients should expect some degree of scarring. However, every effort is made to minimize the scar, and its placement is low enough to be covered by clothing, swimsuits and most underwear. It may seem prominent at first, but with proper care should fade with time. For most patients, an unobtrusive scar is well worth the tradeoff for a slimmer appearance.

How about stretch marks?

The stretch marks or “striae” between your pubis and belly button will be removed; those above the belly button will be moved down but will remain.

What are some potential complications?

Seroma is a fluid collection, usually prevented by the drains, but treatable with aspiration (removal of the fluid) in the office. Infection or bleeding are rare, but may require surgery. Wound dehiscence (breakdown) is very rare in non-smokers but would require surgical revision.

When do I see the final result?

Within the first few weeks almost all of the swelling is usually gone. It may take up to a year or two for the scar to mature.
